WCBRB Best Businesses In United Kingdom 2023

It was lovely to receive an email advising me that I had been selected to be one of the WCBRB Best Businesses in the UK.

I would like to thank all the clients who have taken the time and trouble to leave me a review. One of the criteria for these awards is a consistently high level of customer satisfaction based on Google reviews.  Receiving a lovely review always makes me feel very happy and gives me a big smile. It also goes to show how important reviews are, particularly for small local businesses.

February is Self Esteem Month.

Self Esteem

February is Boost Your Self Esteem Month.  Many of us struggle with low self-esteem, sometimes unknowingly. This can have a big effect on your relationships, work, friends and stop you from doing things that you would like to do.

Self-esteem is the opinion we have of ourselves.

When we have healthy self-esteem, we tend to feel positive about ourselves and about life in general. It makes us better able to deal with life's ups and downs. When our self-esteem is low, we tend to see ourselves and our life in a more negative and critical light. We also feel less able to take on the challenges that life throws at us.

When does low self-esteem normally start?

  • Low esteem often starts in childhood when we feel we are unable to live up to expectations of other people.
  • Social Media is having a very negative impact on self-esteem nowadays and I am seeing more and more children suffering with anxiety and stress.
  • Bereavement, anxiety and stress can all impact our self-esteem. Low self esteem is detrimental to our mental health as it can lead to depression and taking up unhealthy habits.

Some signs of low self -esteem are:

  • Avoiding social events as you feel you have nothing to contribute to a social situation.
  • Staying within your comfort zone and not trying things that you would like to in case you fail or feel you will not be good enough.
  • Running over events in your mind feeling that you have not done well enough.
  • Generally feeling you are not good enough.

What you can do to increase your self-esteem:

  • Ensure you are having relationships with people who nurture and encourage you. Avoid people who bring you down or who have negative thoughts themselves.
  • Write down things that you know you are good at. There is always something we all have our own unique talents.
  • Be kind to yourself. Think how you would react to someone in a similar situation and say those kind words to yourself. Ensure you use positive words to yourself.
  • Set yourself a realistic challenge and put baby steps in to reach it and notice how you feel each time you achieve that baby step.
  • Don’t compare yourself with other people. Each one of us is unique and have our own special talents.
  • A hard one many people struggle with is saying “No”. It is important to do this as it makes other people respect you and helps to empower you.
  • Accept compliments without thinking that people are just being kind. Know that they mean it.
  • Celebrate any successes, no matter how big or small.
  • Talk to a therapist about how you are feeling. I am more than happy to help and offer a free 30-minute zoom consultation.

Feb 1st is Time To Talk Day.

February 1st is Time To Talk Day

What is Time To Talk Day?

Time to Talk Day is the nation’s biggest mental health conversation. Happening every year, it’s a day for friends, families, communities, and workplaces to come together to talk, listen and change lives

We know the more conversations we have; the better life is for everyone. Talking about mental health isn’t aways easy, but a conversation has the power to change lives.

Communication is important, whether it's with a friend, family member, colleague or counsellor. Talking things through helps you to release tension, rather than keeping it inside. Talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled.

Sometimes we just need to offload how we are feeling. If some-one takes the time to listen to us often the problem we are thinking about is reduced. However, if we do not talk about it, the problem manifests inside us and gets larger and then can cause all sorts of physical and emotional health problems. Often it then becomes more challenging to talk about, so it is important to talk about anything that is bothering you as soon as possible even if you feel it is a trivial matter. Everybody’s reality to a challenge is different.

What to do if some-one wants to talk:

  • Find somewhere that the person feels safe to unload if possible.
  • Walking can be a good option as it is generally a relaxing pastime and allows time to open up.
  • Sitting side by side rather than opposite as it is less intimidating.
  • Ask where they would like to go, but above all don’t put off the talk for the sake of finding a suitable place.

Ask open ended questions and listen.

  • Avoid confrontational questions, and use words like “how does that affect you”, or “what does it feel like?”
  • Very importantly listen carefully to their answers and show that you are interested in what they are talking about. Very often we ask questions and don’t really listen to the answers properly.

Don’t try and fix it.

  • Sometimes we can not understand why they are making something a problem, but you are not that person and not experiencing that issue in the same way.
  • Avoid giving quick fixes, help the person by listening to them.
  • If appropriate suggest possibilities or refer to some-one trained to help.

This event is organised by Mind.

So, on Thursday Feb 1st if you would like to talk to me, please call on 07710722615 or email me info@abalancedbodywithbowen.co.uk to book a zoom call. It will be great to hear from you. If not me, do please talk to friends, colleagues, family.

Let’s get talking.

Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic Drainage

I am delighted to advise that I am now offering Lymphatic Drainage alongside my Bowen Therapies. This can be carried out with a Bowen Treatment or as a stand alone treatment. It is very gentle like Bowen and my clients are both enjoying it and seeing great results.

What is The Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is a network of tubes, tissues and organs that runs throughout your body. It is part of your immune system which helps protect you from infection by fighting bacteria and other infections destroying old or abnormal cells such as cancer. It also affects your cardiovascular health, gut health, chronic pain, and nervous health system. In fact, the health throughout your whole body.

Lymphatic Drainage treatment follows the flow of the lymphatic system, identifying the main lymph node areas - “lymphatic hotspots”, making sure these areas are free of restrictions, thereby having the best chance of maintaining lymphatic flow. Like Bowen it is a gentle hands on treatment which can be carried out through clothes and is pleasant to receive.

Some common conditions caused by a poor lymphatic system:

  • Brain fog
  • Low energy/fatigue
  • Swollen Glands
  • Unexplained aches and pains
  • Sinus problems
  • Recurring colds
  • Gut issues
  • Heightened allergies
  • Overactive immune response
  • Joint stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Swelling in the fingers/ankles
  • Bloating/water retention
  • Constipation
  • Breast swelling and tenderness

SAD – Seasonal Affective Disorder

Bowen for Mental Health

Seasonal Affective Disorder

With the clocks going back and the nights getting darker, it is time to look after your mental wellbeing. According to the NHS it's thought that seasonal affective disorder (SAD), affects around 2 million people in the UK. It can affect people of any age, including children.

Key symptoms:

  • depression
  • sleep problems
  • lethargy and fatigue
  • overeating
  • irritability
  • feeling down and unsociable
  • Joint and muscle pain

Tips To Help Yourself

There are many things you can do to help yourself and it is always better to start sooner rather than later. Some suggestions are:

1 Exercise – Research has shown that a one hour walk in daylight can be as helpful as light treatment.

2 Keep Warm - I know most of us are concerned about the cost of heating this year but being cold can make you more depressed. It's also been shown that staying warm can reduce the winter blues by half.

Keep warm with hot drinks and hot food. Wear warm clothes and shoes and aim to keep your home between 18C and 21C (or 64F and 70F degrees). Layering clothes is an excellent way of keeping warm.

3 Eat Well and Regularly -  A healthy diet will boost your mood, give you more energy and stop you putting on weight over winter. Balance your craving for carbohydrates, such as pasta and potatoes, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Eating regularly will also help to keep you warm.

4 Light Therapy - Some people find light therapy effective for seasonal depression. One way to get light therapy at home in winter is to sit in front of a light box for up to two hours a day.

5 Find a New Hobby – keeping your mind active helps to combat SAD. A new hobby generally inspires us and gives us something to look forward to and concentrate on.

6 Socialise with Friends and Family - It's been shown that socialising is good for your mental health and helps ward off the winter blues. So even if you only go for a little whole, do keep in touch with people. It can be so tempting on the dark, cold nights just to stay in.

7 Have Therapy –Talking to someone or having a hands-on treatment or a combination of the two can help you cope with the symptoms. I am offering a free 30 minute zoom chat or telephone call if you would like to chat anything through.

8 Support Group

Think about joining a support group. SADA is the UK's only registered charity dedicated to SAD. It costs £20 (£10 for concessions) to join, and you'll receive an information pack, regular newsletters, discounts on products such as light boxes, and contacts for telephone support.

I hope this helps, but if you have any questions please call or email me.
